The Hope Movement draws on traditions containing extraordinary wisdom — but also blindspots that can, at times, be dangerous. The same traditions that liberate people have sometimes harmed them (think fundamentalism, crusades, cults, abusive teachers). The line between healthy and harmful transformation isn't always obvious, and the stakes rise with group and power dynamics.

If you are looking to work with a teacher or community — we encourage you to first earn your "transformation license". Just as you learn safety principles before driving, learn them before engaging powerful inner technologies. It can save real heartbreak and trauma.

1. Learn principles of safe vs. dangerous transformation

Start with the books Take Back Your Life (Janja Lalich), Spiritual Transmission (Amir Freimann), and Sex and the Spiritual Teacher (Scott Edelstein). Other valuable books include:

2. Research any lineage, community, or teacher you're considering

Search thoroughly: the teacher, their lineage, community, and organisation.
Investigate controversies, patterns of harm, adverse effects of practice or claims of abuse or cultism. Note recurring patterns — problematic behaviour often repeats across students, communities, and generations.

Taking these steps will likely make your transformational journey smoother. Wishing you all the very best!
